The Step By Step Guide To Creating Leather Part 1

The Step By Step Guide To Creating Leather,
Pt 1
Leather is a material that has been used for many years, and it's not going anywhere anytime soon. Leather is one of the most versatile materials we have available to us. But, do you know how to create it? Most people think that it's a simple process, but in reality, it isn't as easy as it may seem. There are many steps and procedures needed to be done before you can get a finished leather product.
In this series, we'll share with you a step-by-step guide on how leather is created so you can discover the art and craft behind it.
How To Create Leather Like A Pro
Creating leather consists of 23 steps, all of which are unique in their own way. Each step is essential to obtain the final result, and skipping any could ruin everything you've worked for thus far.
In this part, we'll share the first 6 steps: curing, soaking, painting, liming, fleshing, and de-liming.
1- Curing
To maintain hides, which are the skins of animals used in leather manufacturing, they must be preserved to avoid deterioration. These preservation techniques may include salting, freezing, chilling, or the use of chemicals.
2- Soaking
After the hide has been cured, it's left to soak in water for many hours — sometimes even days. The goal of this phase is to rehydrate and cleanse the hide. This step is necessary because unwanted dirt deposits, for example, may have occurred during transit, and it's crucial to remove them before any subsequent phases.
3- Painting
Don't be concerned if the phrase "leather painting" makes you think of something different. When creating leather, painting refers to removing wool from sheepskins using sulfides.
4- Liming
Liming serves various purposes, but the main one for this step is to remove any unwanted hair from the skin using alkali. You're left with raw animal skin when the hair is removed, often known as a pelt.

5- Fleshing
Fleshing is when a machine is used to remove tissue from the flesh side of the pelt. It's vital to ensure that the tissue you're removing comes from only one side of the pelt because otherwise, this will cause damage to the pelt. At times, in this stage, a pelt will be divided into layers.
6- De-liming
In this step, the pelt's alkali content is neutralized. It's critical to do this process gradually, as a quick shift in acidity may result in tissue distortion. This can cause problems when converting the pelt into leather.
